What Workings is
Workings is a maths practice program for children.
Each question is pitched just past what your child can already do, with hints when they are stuck.
There are no timers, no countdowns and nothing to lose.
Exactly what we hold
Your child’s name.
An email address to sign in with. It might be your child’s own school address, yours, or the school’s.
Your child’s year level and class.
Their learning record: the questions they practise and how they go. Workings uses it to choose the next question.
What we never hold
No photos. No location. No voice recordings.
We do not ask whether your child is Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and we do not record it.
Where it is kept
Everything is stored in Australia, in Sydney.
Who can see what
Your child sees their own questions, hints and progress, and no one else’s.
Your child’s teachers see how your child is going — what they have mastered, where they need a hand, and common mix-ups. So does the school’s Aboriginal Education Officer if your child is on their caseload, and the school’s administrators.
No one at the school sees every answer your child gives.
If you link a family account, you see the same progress the teacher does.
The Workings team who look after the maths questions see only totals across many children. They never see your child.
OpenAI
Workings uses OpenAI to help draft the wording of questions in advance, which a person checks before any child sees it, and to read questions aloud.
OpenAI never receives your child’s name, email address or anything else that identifies them. It gets the maths, and a general topic like “football”.
When your child types something — an interest, or how they worked a question out — OpenAI checks it for safety before Workings keeps it.
Processing outside Australia
OpenAI is based in the United States, so this is the one part of Workings that may be processed outside Australia.
The text OpenAI receives has no personal information in it. We tell you about it because Australian Privacy Principle 8 covers information sent overseas, and you should know exactly what leaves the country.
How long we keep it
Until you decide, we hold only what the school gave us to send you this request. If you say no, we delete it straight away. If we do not hear from you by the end of term, we delete it then.
While your child is at a school that uses Workings, we keep their learning record.
When your child leaves the school, the school’s access ends that day. If a family account holds the record, it carries on there. If not, we keep it for one term, in case your child moves to another Workings school, and then we delete it.
Your rights
You can ask to see the information we hold about your child, and ask us to correct it.
You can withdraw your consent at any time, from the link in your email or by telling the school.
When you withdraw, your child’s access stops straight away, and the school’s copy of their learning record is deleted within 30 days — unless a family account holds it.
We keep the record of what you agreed to, and when you withdrew, as evidence.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander data
Data about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children is governed consistently with the Maiam nayri Wingara principles of Indigenous data sovereignty, under agreements made with partner communities.
Anything in Workings about culture, Country or community is made with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators and communities — never written by a computer.
Only this, nothing bundled
This is consent for your child to use Workings. We will ask you separately — never as part of this — about anything else, such as sharing results with an independent evaluation or linking a family account.
The first time your child signs in, Workings tells them what it keeps about them, in words they can understand.
Who holds the information
You are the account holder. You can see, change or delete your child’s record from your account.
